There is a clear global shift towards precision medicine in treating various conditions. The International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) has thus outlined terms and decision criteria for distinct pain descriptors, known as pain phenotypes. This article elucidates the relevance of pain phenotyping and its utility in specific patient cases, and explains how to differentiate between nociceptive, neuropathic, and nociplastic phenotypes.
This review serves as a relevant introduction to our E-Seminar, “All Aboard the Pain Train: A Chiropractor’s Guide to Chronic Pain” (AAPT). AAPT delves into the neurophysiology of different phenotypes, their differentiation through basic science and clinical research, and how chiropractors can adapt treatment based on phenotypes. Moreover, AAPT explores the psychological facets of pain management, equipping chiropractors to determine the need for referrals and offer evidence-based psychological strategies for individuals with persistent pain and concurrent psychological challenges.
